An early detection, assessment, and (re)habilitation program for hearing impaired children in the Province of Saskatchewan. SPARC is located at the Royal University Hospital (Saskatoon) in Ellis Hall.
| Why do families access SPARC? |
SPARC is a family-centered program providing auditory-verbal therapy and (re)habilitation services to children with a hearing loss. Children who do not benefit from traditional amplification may be referred by SPARC to the Saskatchewan Cochlear Implant Program.
The Elks and the Order of the Royal Purple of Canada have supported the program since its inception in 1976. The major fund raiser is the annual Walkathon organized by the Saskatchewan Elks Association and the Saskatchewan Royal Purple Lodges. SPARC provides the following services:
- Helps parents understand the implications of hearing loss;
- Helps parents adjust to the use of the child’s amplification;
- Helps parents work effectively with their children to develop language;
- Provides ongoing evaluation of the child’s auditory and communicative development;
- Provides opportunity to meet other parents of hearing impaired children through parent group meetings;
- Provides information regarding future educational opportunities;
- Assists with the transition from SPARC to the school system;
- Provides information to medical students on hearing loss in children;
- Provides pre-surgical counselling for families whose children are candidates for cochlear implants;
- Provides intensive (re)habilitation for children who have undergone cochlear implant surgery.
